Architectural design in Africa has long been influenced by Western models, often overlooking the continent's unique climate and cultural heritage. This disconnect has led to buildings that are not only unsuitable for local conditions but also lack an authentic African identity.
Dirah AI, founded by Kenyan architect Victor Kiarie, seeks to address these challenges by integrating artificial intelligence into climate-responsive and culturally grounded architecture. In an interview with a Sputnik Africa correspondent, Kiarie attributes the limitations of contemporary African architecture primarily to a lack of local knowledge among architects. He explains that architectural curricula in Africa are largely derived from Western education systems, leading to a disconnect between design and the realities of the continent. This results in buildings that replicate Western models without taking into account Africa's unique climate and societal structures. Additionally, the scarcity of climate data makes it difficult to create truly responsive designs. To address these issues, Dirah AI leverages artificial intelligence to help architects analyze climate data and visualize culturally relevant designs. By incorporating AI-driven insights, the platform enables architects to create structures that are both functional and rooted in African heritage. To find out what else the innovator had to say, tune in to the Global South Pole podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict, and Overcast.► Check out all the episodes of Global South Pole.

Bridging Tradition and Technology in African Architecture Using AI
“When we [African architects] went straight to designing buildings, we tried to replicate buildings that are in the West. The problem is that buildings in the West respond to different challenges. In Africa, we have our own challenges. Western buildings are designed for a completely different climate, whereas here in the tropics, we face unique environmental conditions. You can't just take those designs and superimpose them. Another challenge is access to climate data. Kenya, for example, has about 170 weather stations, which do not cover enough climate data for most locations in the country. If you want to design a climate-responsive building, you first need the data to inform that response,” Kiarie explains.
To address these issues, Dirah AI leverages artificial intelligence to help architects analyze climate data and visualize culturally relevant designs. By incorporating AI-driven insights, the platform enables architects to create structures that are both functional and rooted in African heritage.
“We use AI to help them analyze climate data. And then, on that thing of loss of cultural identity, that's why we use image generation to help them visualize what that could look like. So that's exactly what Dirah AI does,” he says.
