WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US top official Donald Trump noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has always strongly opposed Ukraine's membership in NATO, and according to him, that was the reason the conflict started after ex-President Joe Biden said that it could join the military alliance.
US President Donald Trump has said it was "stupid" of Joe Biden to claim Ukraine could become a NATO member because a country like Russia would never allow that.

"I think Biden is incompetent, and I think when he said that they could join NATO, I thought that was a very stupid thing to say. [...] "I don't see any way that a country in Russia's position could allow them to join NATO. I don't see that happening," Trump told reporters on Thursday.

Earlier this week, US President Trump reportedly said he is okay to take the issue of Ukraine's membership in NATO off the table because he does not think it is practical.
