Direct dialogue between legitimate authorities is essential to reduce tensions, address root causes of conflicts, and promote sustainable peace, a South African expert emphasized.
The recent
direct talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump set an example for African nations that have ongoing conflicts on their territory, Chief Director of the Institute for Economic Research on Innovation of the Tshwane University of Technology
Dr. Rasigan Maharajh told
Sputnik Africa."The symbolism of Putin and Trump talking together maybe offers us brighter prospects and lessons for the current belligerents in the various intense conflicts across our continent. I do hope that those involved in violence can learn from this example and begin to talk to each other directly," he explained.
While the recent conversation between the leaders of Russia and the US on the Ukrainian conflict is a positive step, deeper discussions are needed to address the root causes of the conflict, Maharajh emphasized.
"The recent reports of the conversation between the elected leaders of Russia and the US should be welcomed, and I think [it] is being welcomed. But they also need to be encouraged to deepen their discussions so that it's not only dealing with issues as they appear today, but that more effort is placed on uncovering the root causes of the conflict," he said.
According to the expert, Africans, who face escalating violence and instability, would benefit from similar dialogue aimed at justice and establishing security.
"The heroic resilience of the peoples of Africa as a whole, and especially those located in the regions experiencing turmoil, would certainly benefit from more dialog, which seeks to promote peace and stability on the basis of justice," he noted.
Furthermore, prioritizing human needs—such as safe water, electricity, and internet—over military spending is vital for fostering livable peace, and encouraging global powers like Russia and the US to align with these goals serves the collective interest of humanity, the expert added.
"It's impossible to understand the amounts of resources being devoted to the industry that generates military equipment as opposed to improving the quality of life of those affected on a daily basis by the hostilities coming from things like unsafe water, lack of electricity, no Internet connection. These are the things that I think provide us the basis of a justifiable, of a livable peace. And these are the things that I would encourage us to embrace and take forward, encouraging both Russia and the United States of America to also see this in our collective interest," Maharajh concluded.
