On Thursday, the Sudanese foreign minister sent a letter to the foreign ministers of the AU Peace and Security Council member states, which detailed the crisis in the country since the Rapid Support Forces rebelled, attempted a coup, and waged war against the Sudanese state, the foreign ministry said.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yousuf al-Sharif urged the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) to reassess its stance on the country and called for its reintegration into the AU.
"[Sudanese foreign minister] called on the AUPSC to reconsider the AU's assessment of the situation in Sudan in light of the recent developments, and the need for Sudan to return to its natural place in the continental organization and resume its leading role in African action," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The letter also outlined a
post-war roadmap announced by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, according to the statement.
In a recent exclusive interview with Sputnik Africa, Foreign Minister al-Sharif said that the post-conflict recovery roadmap issued by the government presents a significant opportunity to achieve stability in Sudan with the support of AU, which is expected to reinstate the country's membership, reversing a suspension decision made years ago.
"Now, I think they need to resume full membership of Sudan in the AU so that the AU can play a positive role in the developments in Sudan," he noted.
The post-conflict roadmap will include the establishment of a new civilian-led government, under an amended constitutional framework, al-Sharif also pointed out.
The AUPSC suspended Sudan's participation in all AU activities until the effective restoration of the
civilian-led transitional authority on October 26, 2021.
