The 4,000-kilometer Trans-Saharan gas pipeline is not just infrastructure, but a shared vision for a prosperous future, reflecting Algeria, Niger and Nigeria's desire to build a strategic bridge between Africa and the world, Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab reportedly pointed out at the ministerial meeting of the project's steering committee.
The energy ministers of Algeria, Nigeria and Niger, as well as representatives of the countries' oil and gas companies, signed a series of agreements on Tuesday to advance the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline (TSGP) project, which aims to connect Africa's vast gas reserves to
European and global markets, including an agreement to update the feasibility study, a compensation agreement, and a non-disclosure agreement, state Radio Algeria reported.
"We now have the means and the tools to move forward. Each state is committed to contributing in an accelerated manner to this comprehensive project that will benefit the nations," the broadcaster quoted Nigerien Petroleum Minister Sahabi Oumarou as saying at a press conference following the fourth ministerial meeting of the TSGP steering committee held in Algeria's capital Algiers.
Nigerian Petroleum Resources Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo, for his part, emphasized his country's
commitment to continue working on the project.
Meanwhile, Algerian Energy Minister Mohamed Arkab stressed the strategic importance of the TSGP project, which positions the continent as a key player in the global energy market.
"Algeria fully supports this project and will continue to work with Nigeria and Niger to make this great African dream a reality and build a new energy future for Africa, a future in which our continent will play an important role in global energy security and the development of its peoples," Algeria Press Service quoted Arkab as saying on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting.
