US President Trump on Whether Ukraine Equal Member of Peace Process: 'They Have to Make Peace'
10:37 13.02.2025 (Updated: 16:19 13.02.2025) WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – On Wednesday, US President Trump had a phone call with Russian President Putin; they discussed a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, adding that Trump spoke in favor of a quick cessation of hostilities, while Putin spoke in favor of eliminating the causes of the conflict.
When asked whether he views Ukraine as an equal participant in the peace process, US President Donald Trump described it as an intriguing question and emphasized that the Ukrainians "have to make peace."
"It's an interesting question. I think they have to make peace. Their people are being killed, and I think they have to make peace," Trump told reporters on Wednesday.
Trump also said that he doubts Ukraine will be able to regain its 2014 borders in any upcoming peace deal with Russia.
"I think [Secretary of Defense] Pete [Hegseth] said today that that's unlikely, but it certainly would seem to be unlikely. They [the Russians] took a lot of land, and they fought for that land… but it would just seem to me, and I'm not making an opinion on it, but I've read a lot on it, and a lot of people think that that's unlikely," Trump said, answering the relevant question.
At the same time, Trump mentioned that it is possible for "some" of the territory acquired by Russia during the conflict to be returned to Ukraine.
During his election campaign, Donald Trump vowed to end the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours of taking office. Meanwhile, US special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg has reportedly set a goal of ending the conflict
in 100 days after Trump's inauguration on January 20.
Russia has been conducting its special military operation since February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the operation aims to "protect people subjected to genocide by the Kiev regime." According to the president, the ultimate goal of the operation is to completely
liberate Donbas and create conditions that guarantee Russia's security: Ukraine must undergo demilitarization and denazification.
