Haydar Ali al-Sidig represented Sudan's national team from 1966 to 1980. During his sport career he played for the Sudanese club Al-Hilal, the Al-Nasr Riyadh club in Saudi Arabia and Cote d'Ivoire's Stade d'Abidjan club.
Sudanese
football legend Haydar Ali al-Sidig, also known as Ali Gagarin, died on Wednesday at the age of 75 in a Cairo hospital, Al-Hilal football club said.
Gagarin, nicknamed after the famous Soviet cosmonaut for his remarkable athleticism, achieved significant success during his career. With Al-Hilal, he won the Sudanese championship three times and scored a record 350 goals in just 12 seasons.
In Aprill 2024, Gagarin sat down with Sputnik Africa in one of his last interviews ever to reflect on his glorious football career.
"I personally admire this man, Yuri Gagarin. I admire the name. And I also admire the personality of Yuri Gagarin… He was a humble and kind man who always had a smile, and his smile was said to be charming," the Sudanese Gagarin said back then.
Al-Sidig's most notable achievement came in 1970 when he helped the Sudanese national team
to win the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring one goal in that tournament and three more in the 1976 edition.
After retiring from sports, Gagarin devoted himself to diplomacy, serving as Sudan's ambassador to several African countries, as well as France and Turkey. He was also actively involved in football administration, serving on the technical committees of the African Football Confederation and the Arab Football Association.
