WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The case of Russian citizen Alexander Vinnik in the United States, who is accused of cryptocurrency money laundering, is closed and since yesterday evening he no longer appears on the list of prisoners, his French lawyer told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
Russian national Alexander Vinnik, who was imprisoned in the United States, has left the Santa Rita jail in California, a jail clerk told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
"He is no longer incarcerated with us," the clerk said.
Vinnik will be returned home "very soon" as part of an exchange for American citizen Marc Fogel, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said earlier in the day.

"This was a very good deal for the United States of America and for the rest of the world. We have confirmed that the Russian will be returned home very soon, Alexander Vinnik," Leavitt told reporters.

Earlier in the day, the lawyer said that Vinnik would soon be released and allowed to return to Russia as part of a prisoner swap deal.
"As of yesterday evening, Alexander Vinnik is no longer on the list of prisoners. We also learned that a hearing was held last night and his case was closed. All the conditions for his extradition to Russia have been met: it is crucial for the US Justice Department to have a court decision before sending him to Russia. The Moscow prosecutor's office also insisted on this. So from a legal point of view, everything has been settled," the lawyer said.
