The AU Executive Council, composed of foreign ministers from its member states, meets in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from February 12 to 13, focusing on the theme "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations."
Institutions like the UN Security Council and the African Union are crucial for reducing global tensions and fostering international cooperation, Dr. Jeff Sehume, Advisor to the Minister of Trade and Industry, and Kaamil Alli, Office of the Minister of Trade and Industry, told Sputnik Africa.
Moreover, South Africa’s nonaligned stance positions it as a potential mediator in global conflicts, ultimately paving the way for stronger economic ties and multilateral trade, Alli said on the sidelines of the 46th session of the Executive Council of the African Union, which is taking place as part of the upcoming 38th AU Summit.
Regarding the recent phone call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, Sehume views it as a positive step toward thawing relations between Russia and NATO.
“All peace-loving people hope that this engagement [a meeting between Trump and Putin] can take place sooner rather than later, because these are superpowers that are heavily involved in the world,” he added.

Furthermore, as global tensions shift, BRICS remains a vital force in multilateral cooperation, underscored Alli.
"It’s important that multilateralism and the principles of open and free trade are upheld," he said.
South Africa looks forward to deepening trade ties with its BRICS partners, fostering economic growth, and supporting the expansion of the alliance, according to Alli.
The growing interest from other nations in joining BRICS highlights the rising influence of South-South relations in shaping the global economic order, he added.
