Joseph Boakai, who took office last January, has prioritized tackling corruption in Liberia’s key industries. His administration’s anti-graft efforts have already shown progress, with the country’s score on the 2024 Transparency International Corruption Perception Index rising to 27 from 25—the first improvement in seven years.
Liberian President Joseph Boakai suspended on Wednesday more than 400 top officials for failing to declare their assets to the country’s anti-corruption agency.
The suspension, which lasts for one month without pay, affects high-ranking officials, including the chairman of the National Oil Company of Liberia, the minister of commerce and industry, and ambassadors to the US, UK, and the United Nations.
