Last week, in response to South Africa’s legal action accusing Israel of violating international laws during its war in Gaza and the country's land policy, US President Trump signed an executive order threatening to halt foreign aid and assistance to South Africa.
South Africa’s foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, has affirmed the country’s commitment to pursuing its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, despite retaliatory measures by
Trump. In an interview with the Financial Times, Lamola emphasized that there is “no chance” of withdrawing the case.
“Standing by our principles sometimes has consequences, but we remain firm that this is important for the world and the rule of law,” he was quoted as saying.
The tensions have escalated further as the US accused South Africa of collaborating with
Iran on commercial, military, and nuclear arrangements, claims dismissed by Lamola as “misinformation.”
With concerns growing over the potential loss of $440 million in aid and tariff-free access to US markets under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, South Africa seeks “urgent engagement” with the US.
While maintaining its stance, Lamola expressed hope for dialogue.
“We are willing to engage with them to persuade them, if they are willing to be persuaded,” he reportedly said.
