Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has ordered urgent measures to a cover $156 million deficit in financing of some government programs that emerged after the funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was suspended, the Ghanaian presidency said on Tuesday. To mitigate the challenges, President Mahama instructed the finance minister to prioritize bridging arrangements for the key areas to ensure continuity in service delivery and safeguard public health outcomes.Last week, Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting head of USAID, after which Rubio notified Congress that a review of USAID's foreign assistance activities was underway with an eye toward a potential reorganization. US billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who leads the consultative Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has said that Trump had agreed to shut down USAID. Musk also referred to the agency as a "criminal organization" that "needs to die." Meanwhile, USAID employees worldwide have been put on administrative leave.

Ghanaian President Urges to Cover $156 Mln Deficit Amid USAID Funding Freeze, Presidency Says
08:35 12.02.2025 (Updated: 11:50 12.02.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The Ghanaian president is particularly concerned with the projected $78.2 million shortfall that could hinder essential programs in malaria prevention, maternal and child health, reproductive health and the fight against HIV/AIDS, the country's presidency said.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has ordered urgent measures to a cover $156 million deficit in financing of some government programs that emerged after the funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was suspended, the Ghanaian
presidency said on Tuesday.
"President John Dramani Mahama has directed his Minister for Finance, Cassiel Ato Forson, to take immediate steps to address the significant funding gap caused by the suspension of USAID’s international funding program. The suspension has left a shortfall estimated at $156 million, with critical health and social intervention programs at risk of disruption," the statement read.
To
mitigate the challenges, President Mahama instructed the finance minister to prioritize bridging arrangements for the key areas to ensure continuity in service delivery and safeguard public health outcomes.
“The president is deeply committed to protecting the gains made in these critical sectors and has directed that urgent steps be taken to address the funding gap,” the statement added.
Last week, Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting head of USAID, after which Rubio notified Congress that
a review of USAID's foreign assistance activities was underway with an eye toward a potential reorganization. US billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who leads the consultative Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has said that Trump had agreed to shut down USAID. Musk also referred to the agency as a "criminal organization" that "needs to die."
Meanwhile, USAID employees worldwide have been put on administrative leave.
