Celebrated annually on February 11th, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was established by the UN in 2015 to promote opportunities for women and girls in scientific fields.
With increased access to education and the internet, more women see the potential for careers in science and business, Kenyan medical doctor Claire Atieno, who trained in Russia, told Sputnik Africa, stressing that success requires a strong support system and a resolute personality, essential for the challenging field of scientific validation.
Asked about the person who inspires her the most, she said that it's not necessarily a scientist, but rather someone with a resilience and strength that is not always found among women in science. As an example, she cited Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan woman who has been awarded the Nobel Prize for her outstanding work in the field of environmental protection.

From her experience as an African in Russia, Atieno noted that there are numerous scholarships and significant support from the Russian government that encourage African women to pursue studies in science, including fields like medicine, oil and gas, making Russia a popular destination for these students.
She encouraged young African girls who aspire to become scientists or get a doctorate to believe that they can achieve anything, regardless of their background. Atieno advised women in science to be bold, follow their passions, and not be afraid to express themselves or do things differently, even if it means challenging the status quo.
