France Medias Monde (FMM), a French public media group, which includes RFI and France 24, banned in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger between 2021 and 2023, lost seven million listeners and viewers in Africa between 2019 and 2023, according to the draft objectives and performance contracts (COM) between France and the group.According to the COM, the amount of audience lost represents more than 3% of FMM's global audience in 2019.The decline is attributed to growing distrust of Western media globally and censorship by the new regimes in the Sahel countries; however, the African continent remains crucial for the group's influence, the COM said. The FMM, which presented the COM to the French National Assembly in October, also claimed that to win back audiences in Africa, it must win a perceived "information war" being waged by Russia.

In 2023, French-speaking Africa accounted for over half of RFI’s weekly audience, with 33 million listeners, while for France 24 Africa was the largest viewership base, with 46.8 million viewers. Collectively, Africa provides more than 60 million listeners and viewers, nearly a quarter of France Medias Monde's total audience.
France Medias Monde (FMM), a French public media group, which includes RFI and France 24, banned in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger between 2021 and 2023, lost seven million listeners and viewers in Africa between 2019 and 2023, according to the
draft objectives and performance contracts (COM) between France and the group.
According to the COM, the amount of audience lost represents more than 3% of FMM's global audience in 2019.
The decline is attributed to growing distrust of Western media globally and censorship by the new regimes in the Sahel countries; however, the African continent remains crucial for the group's influence, the COM said.
The FMM, which presented the COM to the French National Assembly in October, also claimed that to win back audiences in Africa, it must win a perceived
"information war" being waged by Russia.
