The new deployment of Ugandan troops reportedly brings its total military presence in the eastern part of the DRC, torn by escalating conflict with rebel groups, to about 4,000-5,000 troops.
Uganda has recently deployed an additional 1,000-2,000 soldiers to the eastern DRC near the conflict zone between the Congolese government and M23 rebels, UN and diplomatic sources told a Western media outlet.
The Ugandan People's Defense Force (UPDF) denied the deployment, saying the troops were shifting to offensive defense as part of their existing joint Operation Shujaa with the DRC against the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group, the report added.
Last Friday, the UPDF said it would adopt a forward defensive posture in its area of Operation Shujaa, which it has been conducting since 2021, until the crisis passes and normalization is restored.

"The aim of the measure will be to deter and deny the numerous other negative armed groups operating in eastern DRC from exploiting the situation, and to safeguard and secure Uganda’s interests," read the statement by the UPDF.
