The initiative to create a national airline and the AES airline is an important boost to strengthen Niger's independence and ensure better control over national and regional air transportation, the Nigerian minister of transportation and equipment said.
Niger's Minister of Transportation and Equipment, Salissou Mahaman Salissou, announced plans to establish a
national airline and another airline serving the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).
"The establishment of an airline of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is a priority," local media quoted Salissou as saying while presenting his report.
The project to create two airlines in the near future is part of an overall strategy to open up Niger, to strengthen the corridors linking the country to
its neighbors, and to facilitate transport within the country, the minister said.
"In terms of air transportation, as I said, the discussions are ongoing, and we have come a long way. Not only at the national level, but also at the confederal level, and with our partners, so that we can make sure that our population has access to air transportation, and that everyone can get from point A to point B in complete safety, according to their capabilities," he reportedly noted.
He also emphasized the efforts to streamline aviation regulations to encourage domestic and foreign investment in the sector, citing the availability of skilled personnel and infrastructure.
"We have already instructed the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) to relax a number of regulations to make things easier. As a result, ANAC was able to very quickly put online the conditions for applying for and obtaining overflight and landing permits. We have also made it easier to obtain the certificate required to set up and operate an airline," Salissou pointed out.
The national airline will improve access to rural areas of the country, helping to provide faster emergency medical care in these areas, the official added.
