South Africa Defends Its Land Expropriation Act After Trump Threatens Aid Cut

On Sunday, US President Donald Trump took to his Truth social media account to accuse South Africa of "confiscating land and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY" and vowed to cut off aid pending a "full investigation."
South Africa's government has firmly defended its land expropriation act, arguing that this law is not unique, after US President Donald Trump threatened to halt funding to the nation.
The South African foreign ministry issued a statement on Monday emphasizing that their expropriation act operates within a constitutional democracy and is not an anomaly.
"We trust President Trump's advisors will make use of the investigative period to attain a thorough understanding of South Africa's policies within the framework of a constitutional democracy," the ministry stated.
The ministry further added,
"This approach will promote a well-informed viewpoint that values and recognizes our nation's dedication to democratic ideals and governance. It may become clear that our expropriation act is not exceptional, as many countries have similar legislation.""We look forward to engaging with the Trump administration over our land reform policy and issues of bilateral interest. We are certain that out of those engagements, we will share a better and common understanding over these matters," South African President Cyril Ramaphosa wrote on social media.
South Africa recently passed a new law on the expropriation of private property for public use. The Act abolishes the apartheid era and aims to bring expropriation law in line with the Constitution, according to the government. The Act sets out
procedures, rules and regulations relating to expropriation and compensation.
