The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) continues to operate on Palestinian territories under the control of Israel, despite an Israeli law banning the organization's activities, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said. On Thursday, the law banning UNRWA activities in Israel and the territories it controls came into force. Israeli government spokesman David Mentzer said on Wednesday that UNRWA offices were to be closed within 48 hours and that all contacts with the UN aid agency would be suspended. The United Nations said Israel had shortened all visas for UNRWA’s international staff to expire on Wednesday, prompting the East Jerusalem office to evacuate to the Jordanian capital of Amman.

UNRWA Continues to Operate After Israel’s Ban on Its Activities, UN Spokesman Says
09:18 31.01.2025 (Updated: 11:53 31.01.2025) MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In late October, the Israeli parliament passed bills aimed at banning UNRWA activities in Israel and the territories it controls after accusing some UNRWA staff of involvement in the October 2023 Hamas attack. The UN says Israel has not provided any evidence to substantiate its allegations.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) continues to operate on Palestinian territories under the control of
Israel, despite an Israeli law banning the organization's activities, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said.
On Thursday, the law banning UNRWA activities in Israel and the territories it controls came into force.
"I can tell you what UNRWA told us today. We’ve been speaking to them by phone a number of times this morning, that they are continuing to deliver assistance and services to the communities that they are serving. UNRWA clinics across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are open. Meanwhile, the humanitarian operation in Gaza continues, including with UNRWA’s work there. UNRWA says that it is committed to staying and delivering," Dujarric told a briefing on Thursday.
Israeli government spokesman David Mentzer said on Wednesday that UNRWA offices were to be closed within 48 hours and that all contacts with the UN aid agency would be suspended. The
United Nations said Israel had shortened all visas for UNRWA’s international staff to expire on Wednesday, prompting the East Jerusalem office to evacuate to the Jordanian capital of Amman.
