Every January, the international community commemorates the profound influence of African heritage on global society. From music and literature to science and fashion, these cultural roots run deep. But beyond the celebrations, is this rich legacy truly valued in mainstream narratives, or is it in danger of fading away?
Introduced by UNESCO, the World Day for African and Afro-descendant Culture highlights the enduring legacy of African heritage and its global influence. More than a celebration, it recognizes the resilience of African communities, their history, struggles, and triumphs. In a changing world, preserving this heritage is not just about the past but also about shaping the future. This day fosters cultural pride, dialogue, and unity, reinforcing Africa’s role in the world. Embracing Africa's rich heritage strengthens respect, inclusivity, and appreciation for the diverse identities shaping our collective history.
Sputnik Africa's correspondent sat with Elijah Kutsiwa, Head of the Zimbabwe-Russia Friendly Association and the Department for Work with Zimbabwe at the African Trade House in Russia, on African Currents to reflect on the World Day for African and Afro-descendant Culture and its significance in preserving African identity, countering Western narratives, and mobilizing the diaspora to shape Africa’s cultural landscape.

"I believe that this platform can be used to amplify the voices of African and African-descendants communities, giving them the space to share their stories, their struggles, and their successes as well. So it's not only just about, you know, celebrating good things that are happening, but also about the struggles that we have gone through," Kutsiwa says.
