MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In December 2023, the Swedish prison service proposed renting prison cells abroad due to the growing shortage of prison space in the country. Swedish media reported that Stockholm was discussing the possibility of renting prison space with Estonia.
Sweden is studying the possibility of renting prison cells abroad due to a shortage of space in the kingdom's penitentiary institutions, Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer said.
"We are studying the possibility of renting prison space with countries that have been open to this, but these discussions are still ongoing," Strommer was quoted as saying by the Aftonbladet newspaper on Wednesday.
The minister did not specify with which countries this agreement is being discussed.
Swedish law does not prevent convicts from being placed in prisons abroad, but this will not apply to minors, persons convicted of terrorist crimes, or those who have been assigned a forensic psychiatric examination, the report added.
