Ethio-Engineering Group (EEG), a government-owned enterprise, plans to begin manufacturing electric vehicles in Ethiopia, utilizing the country's abundant lithium reserves, EEG CEO Suleiman Dedefo told the ENA media outlet.Although raw lithium is currently imported to Ethiopia at low cost from foreign battery manufacturers, the EEG is actively pursuing collaborations with technology providers to process the mineral locally for domestic battery production, which is essential for electric vehicles, the report noted.Leveraging its 550 engineers, the group will initially focus on assembling electric public transport vehicles and cars, aligning with Ethiopia's broader green initiatives to reduce pollution and dependence on petroleum, Dedefo noted.
