The African leaders emphasized the need for unity and a coordinated approach to make the AU a more responsive and effective organization capable of unlocking Africa's full potential and addressing the continent's challenges, including conflicts and terrorism, the Kenyan presidency said.
African leaders convened in Nairobi at the Retreat of the Extended Bureau on the Implementation of Institutional Reforms of the African Union (AU), chaired by Kenyan President William Ruto, to outline a comprehensive reform agenda for the AU, the Kenyan presidency noted in a
statement.
"A fit-for-purpose African Union is a necessary imperative at this point in time if the Union has to play the role of speaking for 1.4 billion Africans," President Ruto stated at a press conference following the discussions.
The Kenyan leader said the reform plan prioritizes strengthening
peace and security, achieving financial autonomy, and enhancing the AU's effectiveness. Key areas of reform discussed include operationalizing the African Court of Justice for better conflict resolution, overhauling the peace and security architecture, and reforming the Pan-African Parliament.
"To this end, we must speak in one voice, act in unity, and remain steadfast in our vision," Ruto said.
To drive these reforms, a committee of five presidents—Kenya's Ruto, Ghana's John Mahama, Comoros' Azali Assoumani, Ethiopia's Taye Atske Selassie, and Guinea-Bissau's Umaro Sissoco Embalo—will be established to support President Ruto's efforts as the AU's champion of reform, the presidency added.
"This will broaden the ownership of the reform process, enhance the momentum, and provide strategic leadership for the implementation process," Kenya's top official emphasized.
The upcoming East African Community summit on the DRC situation was also announced, highlighting the AU's commitment to regional peace and stability.
