"After reviewing the report from the Monitoring Commission tasked with implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, the Lebanese government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and the continuation of the ceasefire agreement until February 18, 2025," Mikati said. The acting prime minister stated that prior to making the decision, he held consultations with President Joseph Aoun and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri about recent developments in southern Lebanon. Discussions were also held with US officials, who are mediating the ceasefire agreement. In late November 2024, after almost 14 months of permanent escalation, a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah based on the US settlement plan was finally implemented. Under the plan, the Lebanese army must occupy territories in the south of the country, while Hezbollah must withdraw north of the Litani River over the next 60 days. During this time, Israel agreed to completely withdraw its forces from Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces failed to meet the agreed deadline to fulfill the terms of the deal and did not withdraw from several Lebanese border villages. When local residents later attempted to return to these areas on Sunday, Israeli forces opened fire. As a result, 22 people were killed and more than 120 were injured, Lebanon's Health Ministry stated.
