Since 2021, the M23 group has seized large territories of the resource-rich eastern DRC region, displacing thousands and fueling a humanitarian crisis. Their recent advance towards Goma, a city of over one million, follows the collapse of peace talks between the DRC and Rwanda in December.
The United Nations is temporarily evacuating nonessential staff from Goma, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo's
North Kivu province, due to escalating security concerns.
The UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) confirmed the relocation in a statement, explaining that administrative and other staff who can work remotely are being moved.
"The United Nations is temporarily relocating nonessential staff from Goma, such as administrative staff and others that can continue performing their duties from elsewhere, in response to the deteriorating security situation in North Kivu," the mission stated.
MONUSCO emphasized that essential operations will continue uninterrupted, with staff remaining in the field to provide critical services to
vulnerable communities. These services include:
"This precautionary measure safeguards staff safety while ensuring the UN's vital operations in the region remain uninterrupted," MONUSCO added.
