Mpox is a viral disease that occurs primarily in remote areas of central and western Africa, adjacent to tropical forests. The first case of transmission from an animal to a human was recorded in 1970 in the DR Congo.
Kenya gears up for mpox vaccination amid rising cases, Mary Muriuki, the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards in the Kenyan Health Ministry, said.
The Kenyan Ministry of Health, in collaboration with partners, is finalizing plans for the mpox vaccination campaign, with the campaign focusing on high-risk groups such as truck drivers, health workers, and the immunocompromised, according to Muriuki.
She said the vaccines will complement other preventive measures, including enhanced surveillance, timely diagnosis, and quality treatment.

Kenya will procure mpox vaccines through multilateral partnerships and launch public awareness campaigns led by trained health officers, focusing on vulnerable groups. Using safe and effective third-generation vaccines, priority will be given to contacts of infected individuals and health workers, according to senior health official Sultani Matendechero, as cases are expected to rise.
Earlier, Muriuki said that the number of mpox cases in Kenya had reached 36, an increase of five in the past week, including one death from the disease.
