South Africa took over the 12-month G20 presidency from Brazil on December 1, 2024, becoming the first African country to lead the intergovernmental group. The theme of its presidency is "Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability."
Nigeria is set to join the G20, with the
support of South Africa, during its presidency of the group in 2025, Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said at the Africa’s Momentum session on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
"South Africa's chairmanship of the G20 is a good opportunity for us to successfully implement our accession to the association," he stated.
South Africa is a brotherly country for Nigeria, the two nations have strong relations, the minister emphasized.
"We have fraternal relations with South Africa. Nigeria made a significant contribution to the victory of the South African people over the apartheid regime. Thabo Mbeki [South African president from 1999 to 2008] lived in exile in Lagos," Tuggar noted.
Nigeria has repeatedly stated that it is seeking support for its bid to attain full membership in the G20.
"Nigeria is poised, able and willing to be a major player in this family of the G20 and in shaping a new world, without whom, the family will remain incomplete," Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said at the G20 summit in New Delhi in 2023.
In December 2024, Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu,
requested South Africa's facilitation in joining the G20 group, while addressing the ministerial meeting of the 11th Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission in Cape Town.
In early December, during the official launch of South Africa's presidency of the G20, President Cyril
Ramaphosa expressed the country's readiness to assist Nigeria to become a member of the G20.
