The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the country's telecommunications regulator, allowed operators to increase tariffs by a maximum of 50%, half of the 100% increase requested by the telecoms companies in early January. The NCC's approval is aimed at addressing the significant gap between the rising operational costs faced by telecoms operators and current tariffs, which have remained static since 2013, while ensuring that service delivery to consumers is not compromised, the regulator noted. In early January, Nigerian telecoms companies jointly asked the regulator for a tariff hike of almost 100% amid rising costs of operations. Under Nigerian law, tariffs cannot be increased without the approval of the NCC, which regulates the prices for telecoms services.

Nigerian telecoms companies have repeatedly called for tariff increases as the industry reportedly faces an existential threat from unsustainable cost structures caused by inflation, currency devaluation and rising fuel prices.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the country's telecommunications regulator, allowed operators to increase tariffs by a maximum of 50%, half of the
100% increase requested by the telecoms companies in early January.
"The Nigerian Communications Commission will be granting approval for tariff adjustment requests by network operators in response to prevailing market conditions. […] The adjustment, capped at a maximum of 50% of current tariffs, though lower than the over 100% requested by some network operators, was arrived at taking into account ongoing industry reforms that will positively influence sustainability," read the statement by the NCC.
The NCC's approval is aimed at addressing the significant gap between the rising operational costs faced by telecoms operators and current tariffs, which have remained static since 2013, while ensuring that service delivery to consumers is not compromised, the regulator noted.
"These adjustments will support the ability of operators to continue investing in infrastructure and innovation, ultimately benefiting consumers through improved services and connectivity, including better network quality, enhanced customer service, and greater coverage," the NCC added.
In early January, Nigerian telecoms companies jointly asked the regulator for a tariff hike of almost 100% amid rising costs of operations. Under Nigerian law, tariffs cannot be increased without the approval of the NCC, which regulates the prices for
telecoms services.
