Nigeria and Egypt plan to establish a joint chamber of commerce by the end of 2025 to boost trade and investment, while also addressing barriers to economic integration in Africa through the African Continental Free Trade Area, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
Nigeria and Egypt agreed to elevate relations to comprehensive partnership, strengthening bilateral cooperation in various sectors, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry
said in a statement following the meeting between Egypt's top diplomat Badr Abdelatty and his Nigerian counterpart Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.
"As part of the fraternal relations between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the two countries have agreed to elevate their historic relations to the level of a comprehensive partnership," read the statement.
During the third round of ministerial political consultations held in Cairo on Saturday, the two countries agreed to strengthen diplomatic ties, enhance security cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism.
"They [Egypt and Nigeria] particularly emphasize the need to address the threat posed by terrorism and extremism. In this context, they agreed to exchange and share experiences in the practical application of a comprehensive approach to combating terrorism in its military, security, intellectual, environmental and developmental dimensions," the Egyptian ministry noted.
The parties also emphasized collaboration within the African Union to address continental challenges and advance shared goals, according to the statement.
"Both parties recognize the growing challenges Africa faces. […] In this regard, the two countries agreed to intensify coordination and consultation on regional and international issues of common interest," read the statement.
Furthermore, Nigeria and Egypt have agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, agriculture, energy, telecommunications, and education.
"The parties recognize the significant opportunities to strengthen bilateral economic, trade and investment relations. They agreed to make further efforts at the level of both governments, encourage greater engagement and leadership from the private sector to increase the volume of trade, diversify their cooperation and explore new investment opportunities in agriculture, irrigation, water management, energy, communications, information technology and critical infrastructure, as key catalytic sectors for job creation, poverty reduction and sustainable development," the Egyptian diplomacy noted.
Both nations also emphasized cultural exchange and educational collaboration as important part of bilateral cooperation, including exploring scholarship programs and capacity-building initiatives through specialized institutes.
