MOSCOW (Sputnik) - A presidential election took place in the United States on November 5, 2024. Republican candidate Trump, who served as the US president from 2017-2021, won the election. The presidential inauguration will take place on January 20.
The summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump is not just a face-to-face meeting of the two heads of state; it requires thorough preparation, director general of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Ivan Timofeev, has told Sputnik.
“As for the summit, it is not just a meeting. A summit between the presidents of Russia and the United States requires careful preparation, a lot of work at home. You don't need a summit just to shake hands,” Timofeev said.
Moscow and Washington could maintain international ties without a summit, as high-level meetings and personal relations of heads of states do not always provide for political results, Timofeev added.
"At the end of last year, at the traditional Valdai Club meeting, the Russian president spoke, in particular, about the good, constructive personal relations he once had with a number of world leaders. At the same time, while smiling and saying one thing, all of them, in parallel, rigidly promoted their own interests," Timofeev also said, adding that he believes Putin is "under no illusion" about maintaining personal contacts.

In December 2024, Trump said that he would wait for a meeting with Putin after the Russian president expressed readiness for personal contacts with his US counterpart. On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there were no substantive preparations for a meeting with Trump yet, but there was political will, as "such contacts would be very, very necessary and advisable." On Tuesday, Trump said he would like to hold a meeting "very quickly," as soon as he takes office.
