Russia considers it a positive sign that Iran's informal contacts with Germany, France and the United Kingdom on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran nuclear deal, have resumed, Russia's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Saturday. The unwillingness of the Western countries to resume negotiations on the JCPOA and their "unreasonable politicization of the issue" are the main hurdles on the path toward reviving the treaty, the Russian official added. It remains to be seen whether the White House is willing to look for a political solution and reasonable balance of interests, without which it would be impossible to expect a positive result, the official pointed out, saying that the situation may become clearer in 2–3 months. In 2015, the UK, China, France, Germany, Russia, the US and Iran reached a nuclear deal that lifted sanctions in exchange for curbs on Iran's nuclear program. The US, under the presidency of Donald Trump, withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018 and reimposed sanctions on Tehran, Iran then announced a phased reduction of its commitments under the deal, including lifting restrictions on nuclear research and uranium enrichment.

Resumption of Iran's Talks on JCPOA With Germany, France, UK Good Sign, Russian Official Says
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia sees the contacts on the Iran nuclear deal between Iranian representatives and the political directors of the foreign services of Germany, France and the UK as being of a preliminary nature, an informal dialogue that is far from real negotiations, a Russian official noted.
Russia considers it a positive sign that Iran's informal contacts with Germany, France and the United Kingdom on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran
nuclear deal, have resumed, Russia's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Saturday.
"As far as we understand, recently there has been a resumption of informal contact between representatives of Iran with political directors of foreign services of Germany, France, and the UK, as well as with representatives of the European External Action Service, which used to play the role of the JCPOA negotiations’ coordinators," Ulyanov said in an interview with the Tehran Times newspaper.
The unwillingness of the Western countries to resume negotiations on the JCPOA and their "unreasonable politicization of the issue" are the main hurdles on the path toward reviving the treaty, the Russian official added.
"The position of the US remains unclear, specifically regarding whether it will acknowledge that its withdrawal from the JCPOA and imposition of the ‘maximum pressure’ campaign led to outcomes directly opposite to those it had been counting on," Ulyanov added.
It remains to be seen whether the White House is willing to look for a political solution and reasonable balance of interests, without which it would be impossible to expect a positive result, the official pointed out, saying that the situation may become clearer in 2–3 months.
