Such incidents are not uncommon in the West African country. Last October, a fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria's Jigawa State led to the deaths of more than 180 individuals, leaving many others injured.
The number of people killed as a result of the fuel tanker explosion in Nigeria has increased from 70 to 86, the Thisday Live portal reported, citing the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah.
At the scene of the incident in the town of Dikko in Niger State, western Nigeria, debris clearance is ongoing. Medical assistance is being provided to the injured in local hospitals.
According to eyewitnesses, the day before, a fuel tanker carrying 60 tonnes of fuel overturned on the road. Another tanker arrived to transfer the contents. Local residents approached the scene, attempting to collect the spilled fuel. At that moment, an explosion occurred, igniting a fire.

Reacting to the incident, President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing the tragic and preventable nature of the event. He urged caution around accident scenes, particularly with fuel-laden vehicles, and called for improved safety measures by authorities.
Additionally, the National Orientation Agency has been tasked with launching a nationwide campaign to educate the public on the dangers of scooping fuel from fallen tankers. Such tragedies, unfortunately, are not uncommon in Nigeria, often leading to significant loss of life.
