On January 17, the world commemorates the early death of Patrice Lumumba, one of Africa's strongest actors who fought for a united Democratic Republic of the Congo free from colonization. AfroVerdict host joins the president of the association of African students at a Russian university named in honor of the Congolese hero.
The People's Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) officially regained the name of Patrice Lumumba in 2023, now named the Patrice Lumumba People's Friendship University of Russia, which makes students of the university from African countries "proud that the university carries his name," according to Thomas Edwin Williams, President of the Association of African Students of the Patrice Lumumba People's Friendship University of Russia (RUDN).

"By the way, the first student to study at RUDN was from my country, Sierra Leone. Dr. Taqi with [student ID] number 001," Thomas says.

In addition, Diploma #1 was issued to a graduate of the faculty of Economics and Law, Hange Kasim, from Zanzibar, in 1961.
"All these things are embedded in the history of the university because it was the entire essence of the university when it was formed," Thomas continues.
Thomas Williams explains that Lumumba's vision "was entirely based on the essence of unifying the Congo." His party, the Mouvement National Congolais (MNC), was the only party at the time "that wasn't tribal-based."
Patrice Lumumba dedicated his life to freeing his people and country from the Belgian colonial government, forming alliances between parties, mitigating internal conflict, and eventually leading his people to independence. However, due to the personal ambition of his rivals, betrayal, and tribal division, Patrice Lumumba had an early death on January 17, 1961, executed by a local firing squad under a Belgian officer.

"[A lesson] would definitely be standing up for what you believe in because [Patrice Lumumba] stood for what he believed in until the very end. He died for it, so it's literally you are dying for what you believe in," Mr. Williams highlights.
