Israel, the Palestinian movement Hamas, the US, and Qatar officially signed an agreement on the release of hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, according to US media. However, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly allowed for the resumption of military operations after the first stage of the deal.
Several African countries and the African Union welcomed the
ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas on Thursday.
Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, praised the critical role of Qatar, Egypt, and the US in the ceasefire, urging immediate and full implementation of the agreement and expressing hope for justice and peace for Palestinians.
“I welcome the permanent ceasefire announced by the State of Qatar, which marks an extremely significant and overdue moment for the occupied people of Gaza, who have endured agonizing misery,” Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba stated, noting that "the ceasefire will open a new opportunity for enduring peace in the Middle East."
South Africa welcomed the ceasefire and called for a "just and lasting peace" that protects the human rights of both Palestinians and Israelis. The
South African Foreign Ministry stressed that the ceasefire must address the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and must lead to a viable Palestinian state, an end to annexation, an end to illegal settlements and adherence to International Court of Justice rulings.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud lauded the efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the
US in brokering the ceasefire, emphasizing its sustainability and calling for urgent aid to Gaza. He reaffirmed Somalia's support for the Palestinian cause and a two-state solution.
The agreement will enter into force on Sunday, January 19. During the first stage, which will last 42 days, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages, including female soldiers and civilians, as well as wounded civilians, children and the elderly, in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. In addition, Israel will withdraw its troops to the borders of the Gaza Strip to a depth of 700 meters, Al Jazeera reported, citing a source.
