For Africa, the only way to break with imperialism is to break the defense agreements with France, because the French military is working to weaken African armies so that France has the pretext to stay on the continent, said Burkinabe leader Ibrahim Traore in a speech to the nation, commenting on Emmanuel Macron's recent remarks condemning the ingratitude of some countries towards Paris.Last Monday, French President Macron said that African nations "forgot to say thank you" to France for its assistance in fighting terrorism in the Sahel region. Since 2022, six West African countries, namely Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Senegal, and Cote d'Ivoire, have officially terminated military agreements with France. Burkina Faso's leader Traore called on all Africans to "wake up, fight imperialism and decolonize the mentality" by cancelling defense cooperation agreements with France.
For Africa, the only way to break with imperialism is to break the defense agreements with France, because the French military is working to weaken African armies so that France has the pretext
to stay on the continent, said Burkinabe leader Ibrahim Traore in a speech to the nation, commenting on Emmanuel Macron's recent remarks condemning the ingratitude of some countries towards Paris.
"If you want a break with these imperialist forces, it's simple: we denounce the agreements. If we don't denounce the agreements, if we just say that they are leaving the [military] bases, then we have done nothing," he noted, referring to the decision of several African countries to break military cooperation agreements with France.
Last Monday, French President Macron said that African nations "forgot to say thank you" to France for its assistance in fighting terrorism in the Sahel region.
"He insulted all Africans [...] That's how this gentleman sees Africa, how he sees Africans. We are not human in his eyes," the Burkinabe top official stated, commenting on Emmanuel Macron's remarks.
The French president spoke of ingratitude as a disease that cannot be transmitted to human beings, Traore emphasized.
"But if anyone is ungrateful, it is him. If he is not an atheist, every time he wakes up and prays, he should also pray for Africans, because it is thanks to our ancestors that France exists today," the Burkinabe head of state said.
