Addis Ababa is generally considered one of the safer cities in Africa, with relatively low violent crime rates. However, petty crimes like pickpocketing and mobile phone theft can occur, particularly in crowded areas.
The Ethiopian Federal Police have announced plans to deploy drone technology to bolster traffic monitoring, enhance general security, and oversee large-scale events in the nation's capital, Addis Ababa, local media reported.
General Demelash Gebremichael, Commissioner of the Federal Police, revealed the initiative during a recent briefing, stating that the drones will play a crucial role in addressing urban security challenges and improving crime prevention strategies.
The commissioner emphasized that coordinated efforts by security forces have already led to significant progress in ensuring public safety, particularly in preparation for major upcoming events, including the Timket (Epiphany) festival and the African Union Leaders’ Summit. According to him, these measures will ensure peaceful celebrations and gatherings.
