Addis Ababa is generally considered one of the safer cities in Africa, with relatively low violent crime rates. However, petty crimes like pickpocketing and mobile phone theft can occur, particularly in crowded areas.
The Ethiopian Federal Police have announced plans to deploy drone technology to bolster traffic monitoring, enhance general security, and oversee large-scale events in the nation's capital, Addis Ababa, local media reported.
General Demelash Gebremichael, Commissioner of the Federal
Police, revealed the initiative during a recent briefing, stating that the drones will play a crucial role in addressing urban security challenges and improving crime prevention strategies.
The commissioner emphasized that coordinated efforts by security forces have already led to significant progress in ensuring public safety, particularly in preparation for major upcoming events, including the
Timket (Epiphany) festival and the African Union Leaders’ Summit. According to him, these measures will ensure peaceful celebrations and gatherings.
Addressing specific security concerns, such as vehicle theft and mobile phone snatchings, the Federal Police noted that joint security teams are prioritizing solutions to guarantee citizens and
tourists can move freely without fear. Advanced technology, alongside cooperation with the community and law enforcement, has contributed to a noticeable reduction in crime rates.
Addis Ababa Police Commissioner Getu Argaw highlighted the effectiveness of these initiatives, attributing the city's improved security environment to day-and-night surveillance and collaboration with federal forces and community stakeholders.
The Federal Police also confirmed that efforts to counteract organized criminal activities have successfully minimized threats to the city’s safety, ensuring that Addis Ababa remains stable and secure.
