ANKARA (Sputnik) - Ankara is monitoring the formation of the new administration in Syria, Turkish President Erdogan said in the end of December 2024, stressing that there are people connected to Turkey among the representatives of the new Syrian authorities.
The change of power in Syria is also a victory for Turkey as a neighboring country, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday.

"Those who cannot rejoice at the end of the Baath regime's brutality cannot accept that the victory of our Syrian brothers is also our victory as neighbors," Erdogan noted when speaking in the city of Sanliurfa, as broadcast by Turkish news channel TRT Haber.

On Monday, Erdogan said he would order an intervention to prevent Syria from splintering, a warning aimed in particular at the country's Kurdish forces.

"We cannot accept the division of Syria under any pretext, and if we see the slightest risk, we will take the necessary measures," the Turkish leader stated.

Syria's armed opposition captured Damascus on December 8. Syrian President Bashar Assad stepped down after negotiations with participants in the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum. Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister on December 10. He announced that an interim government had been formed and would remain in place until March 2025.
