In November, Gabon accepted the country's new constitution, which aims to strengthen the powers of the presidency while reducing the powers of other state institutions. It establishes a seven-year presidential term with the right to one reelection.
Presidential elections will take place in Gabon on March 22 this year, according to Brice Oligui Nguema, Transitional President of Gabon.
Previously, the military, who seized power in Gabon in a coup, planned to hold presidential elections in August 2025 as a key step in ending the transition period and returning the country to civilian rule.

Gabon Accepts Final Results of Referendum, Adopts New Constitution
In Gabon, high-ranking military officers seized power on August 30, 2023, overturning the August 26 presidential election victory of Ali Bongo Ondimba. Subsequently, Brice Oligui Nguema was appointed head of state for a transitional period. A new constitution, adopted in November, does not prohibit Nguema from running for the office.
