The snowstorm approaching Washington will not prevent the US Congress from certifying the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential election, House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson said. The speaker also expressed hope that the US congressmen would gather in the Capitol in full force to take part in the session. On Monday, the new US Congress will hold a formal procedure for counting and certifying the results of the 2024 presidential election, which was won by Republican Donald Trump, while Vice President Kamala Harris from the Democratic Party, who lost the election, is expected to preside over the process. After this formal procedure, Trump and Vice President JD Vance will be able to take up their duties by taking the oath of office at the inauguration, which will take place on January 20. Earlier, CNN reported that a powerful winter storm threatened about 62 million residents of the central and eastern United States and would bring significant snowfalls, dangerous ice, rain and severe thunderstorms. These weather conditions are expected to affect at least a dozen states, with power outages possible in large areas. Strong thunderstorms may be observed in warm states.

Approaching Storm Will Not Prevent US Congress From Certifying Trump's Victory, Speaker Says
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - On Sunday, authorities in the US capital of Washington, DC declared a state of emergency due to the approaching snowstorm, which would be in effect until the end of the day on January 7. The impending storm has already left grocery store shelves partially empty in Washington suburbs, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.
The snowstorm approaching Washington will not prevent the US Congress from certifying the victory of Donald Trump in the
US presidential election, House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson said.
"The Electoral Count Act requires this on January 6 at 1 pm, so, whether we are in a blizzard or not, we are going to be in that chamber to make sure this is done," Johnson said in an interview with Fox News.
The speaker also expressed hope that the US congressmen would gather in the Capitol in full force to take part in the session.
