MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Russia has been conducting its military operation since February 24, 2022. Russian President Putin said the operation aimed to "protect people subjected to genocide by the Kiev regime." According to him, the ultimate goal of the operation is to completely liberate Donbass and create conditions that guarantee Russia's security.
Russia has set an objective to demilitarize Ukraine during the special military operation precisely because the United States had been secretly funneling arms into Kiev before 2022, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Sputnik on Saturday, commenting on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's recent remarks.

"Russia has been talking about this for many years. About the US and the UK's pouring arms into Ukraine, endless NATO exercises in the Black Sea violating Russian borders and the dangerous rapprochement of military aircraft of Western countries with civilian aircraft in the airspace of our country ... Actually, that is why one of the objectives of the special military operation is the demilitarization of Ukraine and ensuring the security of our country," Zakharova said.

Blinken Says US Started Providing Kiev With Weapons Before Ukraine Conflict Began

Washington secretly supplied Kiev with weapons in 2021, before the start of Moscow's military operation in Ukraine, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in an interview with The New York Times published on Saturday.

"If you look at the trajectory of the conflict, because we saw it coming, we were able to make sure that not only were we prepared and allies and partners were prepared, but that Ukraine was prepared. We made sure that well before the Russian aggression happened, starting in September and then again December [2021], we quietly got a lot of weapons to Ukraine to make sure that they had in hand what they needed to defend themselves, things like Stingers [air-defense systems], Javelins [antitank weapon systems] that were instrumental in preventing Russia from taking Kiev," Blinken said.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that sending arms and ammunition to Ukraine only prolongs the ongoing conflict and leads to more and more losses among Ukrainian soldiers. Moreover, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said any cargo that contains weapons for Ukraine will become a legitimate target for Russia.
