Nigeria is intensifying its efforts to combat oil theft in the Niger Delta, aiming for a production of 3 million barrels per day by 2025.As Africa's top oil producer, Nigeria relies on oil for the majority of its revenue and foreign currency, but large-scale theft has significantly strained government finances. While next year's budget projects 2.06 million barrels per day (bpd), actual production is around 1.8 million bpd, according to the media.Launched last year by the petroleum ministry and navy, Operation Delta Sanity (OPDS) – aimed at combating oil theft – has entered a second phase, now enhanced with armed drones, attack helicopters, and improved intelligence.According to Chief of Naval Staff Emmanuel Ogalla, these reinforcements could boost production beyond the 3 million bpd budget estimate. Ogalla noted that production has already increased from 1.4 million bpd to 1.8 million bpd since the operation was launched and expressed confidence in surpassing the targe.Junior Oil Minister Heineken Lokpobiri indicated that Nigeria's average daily output was slightly over 1 million bpd when he took office in August 2023 and is optimistic that the second phase of OPDS will help reach their 3 million bpd target by 2025.To support anti-oil theft operations, the Rivers State Government recently donated six gunboats to the Navy.

Oil theft in Nigeria involves the illegal appropriation of crude or refined oil from pipelines, often facilitated by cooperation between corrupt security forces and oil company employees, militias, and local populations.
Nigeria is intensifying its efforts to combat oil theft in the Niger Delta, aiming for a production of 3 million barrels per day by 2025.
As Africa's top oil producer, Nigeria relies on oil for the majority of its revenue and foreign currency, but large-scale theft has significantly strained government finances. While next year's budget projects 2.06 million barrels per day (bpd), actual production is around 1.8 million bpd, according to the media.
Launched last year by the petroleum ministry and navy, Operation Delta Sanity (OPDS) – aimed at combating
oil theft – has entered a second phase, now enhanced with armed drones, attack helicopters, and improved intelligence.
According to Chief of Naval Staff Emmanuel Ogalla, these reinforcements could boost production beyond the 3 million bpd budget estimate. Ogalla noted that production has already increased from 1.4 million bpd to 1.8 million bpd since the operation was launched and expressed confidence in surpassing the targe.
Junior Oil Minister Heineken Lokpobiri indicated that Nigeria's average daily output was slightly over 1 million bpd when he took office in August 2023 and is optimistic that the second phase of OPDS will help reach their 3 million bpd target by 2025.
To support anti-oil theft operations, the Rivers State Government recently
donated six gunboats to the Navy.
