This milestone further enhances South Africa's electricity supply, contributing to nine months of uninterrupted power after years of load shedding.
Eskom, South Africa's power utility, announced the successful reconnection of Koeberg nuclear power plant's Unit 2 to the national grid following a significant refurbishment.
Koeberg, Africa's only commercial nuclear power plant, located north of Cape Town, generates approximately 1,860 megawatts, representing 5% of South Africa's electricity needs.

"Koeberg exemplifies how nuclear power can align economic and environmental priorities to create a sustainable energy future," Eskom CEO Dan Marokane highlighted.

Unit 1 of the Koeberg plant recently received a 20-year extension to its operating license, extending its lifespan beyond the initial 40 years. A similar extension for Unit 2 is anticipated before the end of 2025.
Looking to the future, South Africa aims to increase its nuclear power capacity by an additional 2,500 MW. The country is also exploring the potential revival of its Pebble Bed Modular Reactor design, a project previously stalled due to funding and partnership challenges.
