The Nigerian aviation authority imposed sanctions on Ethiopian Airlines amid rising passenger complaints about flight disruptions, the authority's official said.
Ethiopian Airlines pledged to comply with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority's (NCAA) regulations after being sanctioned for violating passengers' rights, the NCAA said in a statement issued after Saturday's meeting with representatives of airlines sanctioned earlier this week.

"They [Ethiopian Airlines] expressed readiness to comply with the NCAA regulations going forward and said that they would send in a compliance report by tomorrow [Sunday]," read the statement.

The NCAA sanctioned Ethiopian Airlines along with four other African airlines for violating passengers' rights, including delayed refunds, mishandled baggage, and failure to comply with the NCAA directives, the NCAA's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Michael Achimugu announced at a press briefing in Abuja this week.
The sanctions aim to improve accountability within the industry, Achimugu pointed out, emphasizing that airlines are responsible for timely refunds and proper baggage handling even during difficult weather conditions and the peak holiday season.
"Force majeure events, such as harmattan [wind that blows from the Western Sahara and is strongest in late autumn and winter], cannot be blamed on the airlines. However, these sanctions address instances where the airlines failed to meet their obligations to passengers," he said.
Two weeks ago, Michael Achimugu issued a warning that any airline that delays the payment of refunds to passengers in accordance with the NCAA Regulations 2023, will be sanctioned, the NCAA said in a statement on Sunday.
