2024 in Review: Africa Steadily Positions Itself as Powerful Force
Sputnik Africa
As Africa reflects on 2024, the continent stands at a pivotal juncture in its economic evolution. With the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) driving regional collaboration and a new seat at the G20 table, Africa is steadily positioning itself as a powerful force in the emerging global multipolar order.
Africa's demographic potential is on par with that of India and China, presenting a unique opportunity for global influence. According to the Power Transit Theory, success in international competition hinges on factors like population, economic strength, and political capability—areas where the African Union must focus its efforts to craft policies that unite and propel the continent forward, as stressed by Professor Mariia Gorbunova, Head of the Department of International Economics and Customs Affairs at the Institute of Economics, N.I. Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Russia, during an interview with African Currents. To find out what else our guest had to say, tune in to the African Currents podcast, brought to you by Sputnik Africa. In addition to the website, you can also catch our episodes on Telegram.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Deezer, Pocket Casts, Afripods, Podcast Addict.► Check out all the episodes of African Currents.

2024 in Review: Africa Steadily Positions Itself as Powerful Force
"When you pay attention to the power transit theory, so basically to the theory of competition between great powers, there are three factors that matter: first of all, population, then GDP or production of oil or energy consumption, metal production, then political capability [...]. When you look at the African continent all together, we see that demographic potential is the same as India and China [...]. So, basically, we need political effort by the African Union to be active and to promote the sort of policy that can cover all the African continent," Professor Gorbunova says.
