The 264 wagons are part of a total of 1,430 such machines contracted to be built by a Chinese state-owned rolling stock company, CRRC, the Tanzania Railways Corporation noted in a statement.
Tanzania's standard gauge railway (SGR), which is the international gauge standard, received 264 freight wagons from China to Dar es Salaam's port, the Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

"The TRC informs the public that 264 freight wagons from China arrived at the port of Dar es Salaam on December 24, 2024, to be used on the standard-gauge railway (SGR) on Dodoma–Dar es Salaam route," read the statement by the TRC issued on Wednesday.

According to the statement, once the unloading is completed, the wagons will be tested empty and then loaded, as the cars will travel at speeds of up to 75 miles (120 km) per hour.

"Of the 264 wagons that have arrived, 200 are ferrying containers and 64 are wagons of loose cargo," the TRC noted.

On August 1, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially announced the launch of the SGR electric trains, connecting the country's capital, Dodoma, with the city of Dar es Salaam, which, according to the president, would simplify trade and social activities between the two large commercial and administrative cities.

"At least 1 million passengers have traveled aboard the SGR electric trains between Dar es Salaam, Morogoro and Dodoma, since the service's launch four months ago," the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania said on X.
