On Monday, Mozambique's Constitutional Council proclaimed candidate of the ruling FRELIMO party Daniel Chapo president of Mozambique, following two months of post-election protests sparked by opposition candidate Venancio Mondlane, in which more than a hundred people were reportedly killed.
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) welcomed Mozambique's Constitutional Council ruling on the country's election results and called for peace and stability during the transition period, SADC chairperson and Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa said in a statement.

"The SADC notes and acknowledges the ruling and confirmation on Monday […] by the Constitutional Council of Election Results held in the Republic of Mozambique on October 9 this year," he stated.

Mnangagwa urged all parties to respect the court's decision and work towards peace and stability.
"SADC expects all parties to the electoral process, both individually and collectively, to abide by the decision of the Council which should provide a constitutional way forward for the country, and facilitate the way to greater peace, normalcy and stability in the interest of all Mozambicans," the statement read.
Zimbabwe's top official called on the international community to respect Mozambique's sovereign will and support its pursuit of peace and order.

"Our region witnessed a record number of national elections in the last two years, itself a loud testimony that democracy continues to find deeper roots and to flourish in our SADC region," Mnangagwa concluded.
