MOSCOW (Sputnik) - NATO countries agreed at a summit in Vilnius in 2023 to spend at least 2% of GDP on defense. Currently, 23 of NATO's 32 member states spend 2% of GDP on defense.
The team of US President-elect Donald Trump has told European officials that his administration will demand NATO members to raise spending on defense to 5% of gross domestic product (GDP), the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Trump will agree to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP, and he plans to clearly link the increase in defense spending to an offer of more favorable trade terms with the United States, one of the sources said.
In February, the US president-elect also expressed dissatisfaction with the work of NATO and threatened to withdraw from the organization if European partners did not bear greater financial responsibility for their security.
