The fair, organized by a local radio station and the charity Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS Foundation), was anticipated to draw up to 5,000 young people.
A devastating crowd crush at a high school fair in Idaban, Oyo state, Nigeria, has
claimed the lives of at least 35 children.
The event promised "exciting prizes," including scholarships and gifts. A homicide investigation has been launched, with arrests made, including that of the main event sponsor.
"At this moment of mourning, President Tinubu stands in solidarity with the affected families and offers prayers that the Almighty God will grant peace to the souls of those who have departed in this unfortunate event," the Nigerian Presidency said in a statement.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also expressed his sympathy and vowed accountability for those involved in the incident. Authorities are urging calm as investigations continue.
