Myanmar Foreign Minister U Than Swe confirmed at an informal Asian ministerial meeting in Thailand's capital on Thursday that Myanmar will hold elections in 2025 and invite foreign observers, Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said. All neighboring countries said they had a shared interest in a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned process that would bring peace, stability and unity to Myanmar. They called on all parties in Myanmar to stop violence and engage in dialogue. The Myanmar foreign minister said that the government "has opened the door for dialogue to find peaceful solutions through a political process." According to Sangiampongsa, the meeting took the form of a sincere and friendly dialogue, reflecting the firm intention of all participants to redouble joint efforts in resolving common problems. Following the military takeover of Myanmar in February 2021 and the opposition's shift to armed struggle in April 2021, the ASEAN Council of Foreign Ministers met with Myanmar to agree on the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus on Resolving the Crisis in Myanmar, which called for an end to armed violence and the start of inclusive peace talks. After Myanmar failed to adopt the provisions, ASEAN decided not to invite the country's officials to its high-level events until progress was made. Thailand's informal consultations allow ASEAN foreign ministers to engage in direct dialog with Myanmar in an informal setting.
