ANKARA (Sputnik) - US President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday he believes Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan were the main actors behind the recent events in Syria that led to the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime. Trump said Turkey "did an unfriendly takeover" of Syria.
It is wrong to call what happened in Syria a "takeover," Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.

"First of all, let me say this: we wouldn't call it a takeover because it would be a great mistake to present what's been happening in Syria. For Syrian people it's not a takeover," Fidan said in an interview with Al Jazeera, commenting on Trump's statements.

Syria's armed opposition captured Damascus on December 8. Russian officials have said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stepped down as president after talks with participants of the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum.
