The term 'Russian soul' has been used in literary discourse to signify the distinctiveness of the Russian national identity. Additionally, it is referred to as the "great Russian soul," and numerous notable Russian writers, including Gogol, Tolstoy, and Dostoevsky, have reflected upon it in their writings.
Russian culture and the Russian soul are characterized by an inclusive nature. In specifying the distinctive characteristics of the Russian soul, writers identified it as a universal responsiveness as a key trait, applicable across a range of contexts, says Vitaly Kurennoy, Director of the Institute for Cultural Research and Head of the Department of Cultural Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.

"The Russian culture, and the Russian soul, is inclusive. [...] I would say it is more of a theme of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and it is a peculiarity of the Russian soul, of Russian culture. One of these key definitions that Russian literature, namely Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky gave to the Russian soul of Russian culture, is his famous speech about our poet Alexander Pushkin. When he said, 'What distinguishes Russian culture, the Russian soul, it is universal responsiveness'", explains Kurennoy.

The concept of the Russian soul is a literary image, given the stark differences between urban and rural Russian culture, highlights Igor Yakovenko, cultural scientist, historian, and political scientist, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy and Professor at the Russian State University for the Humanities.

"The Russian soul is such a literary poetic image because the Russian [people] in the city and Russians in the hinterland are different people. Traditional people are oriented to the inevitability and eternity of their life, they master innovations now, something new comes to them today," states Yakovenko.

According to His Excellency Mr. Genet Teshome Jirru, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to Russia, the Russian people commit to a set of traditional values that serve as the foundation for societal beliefs at all levels.

"There are traditional Russian values, and the core beliefs are shared on every level of society, including love of children, respect for the elderly, a sense of humor, the importance of friendship, generosity, pride, patriotism, a love of the arts, etc... These are some of the major and common characters of the Russians that could be considered as national values and heritage," says the diplomat.
